Northstar Commmuter Rail - Big Lake Station:

The Northstar Commuter Rail is scheduled for Phase 1 (view map) construction and has an estimated completion date of 2009. Phase 1 of this Minnesota Transportation project is scheduled to have a train station just off Highway 10 in Big Lake near the Big Lake Marketplace development. A total of 18 trains will run on the tracks during peak commuter times.

This Commuter Train will provide transportation to users with a 40-minute ride to downtown Minneapolis. Additional train stations will be located in Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley. It is estimated that more than 5,000 people each day will make use of traveling via the Northstar Commuter Rail once it is up and running. This will greatly save both the expense of gasoline and time for commuters traveling to work in the metro area. Having a train station stop located in Big Lake will make the development of Big Lake Marketplace commercial and industrial property and the nearby housing developments, including Hudson Woods, an attractive place to live and do business. The Northstar Commuter rail is funded by Federal and State financial commitments and in part by the Met Council.
